Other PHRF Events in Narragansett Bay
Here's a new thread so that we can separate other events from the weekly PHRF series at JYC.
First Event - The 2012 LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA
Re: Other PHRF Events in Narragansett Bay
First Event - The 2012 LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA
Congratulations to EC Helme ([i]SPIRIT) and Bill Kneller ([i]RHAPSODY) for completing the course in this grueling
demo derby which saw much damage aboard many yachts, many withdrawls & DNCs....and one boat SUNK!
Of the 57 boats registered less than half raced, and only 13 boats across 9 classes finished the race and were
scored!
EC had his hands full with a ripped headsail and he had to chase a windward mark which went adrift, but faired
much better than the two boats ahead of him at the time. EC tallied a 2nd place in the 8 boat class (2 finished).
An autotack hit Bill's [i]RHAPSODY and put the crew partially in the water, plus a locking ring malfunction caused a
winch drum to accidentally detach (in the hands of a falling crew member) and provide a little excitement for Bill's
crew. Of the 3-boat J-30 class only Bill raced and his completion of the course was good for a win....A WIN is a WIN!

[u]ADDITIONAL NOTE TO 2012 LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA:
It is vital to mention the key element of this regatta----to support the vital research efforts to combat
this terrible disease. Much credit is deserved by the owners, crews & other supporters of this longstanding
chain of national regattas. Beyond the excitement of sailing on historic Narragansett Bay, the competitive
racing, the trophies & party are the heart warming rewards of having helped leukemia victims and their
families to have continued hope in their battle.
B/Z to our CHNYC sailors for raising funds to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society-----
EC Helme & [i]SPIRIT crew - 3rd highest fund raiser for the RI Leukemia Cup. The [i]SPIRIT crew had a
charity wine tasting event at the Newport Art Museum which helped them to raise over $3000.
Kudos also to Bill Kneller & his [i]RHAPSODY team which raised over $2225.

[u]FIRST BIG EVENT OF THE PHRF SEASON IN NARRAGANSETT BAY:
[u]The Leukemia Cup Regatta is Saturday 8 June.
CHNYC boats signed up so far are [i]Spirit, Katannah and Rhapsody.
The RI Leukemia & Lymphoma Society asked if there might be volunteers with
power or sail boats who would be willing to take some folks on the water to
observe the race. This may include families with people who are undergoing
treatment.
The Rhode Island Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is holding their annual fund
raising regatta on Saturday 8 June. CHNYC Members Chris Ivey (Katannah),
EC Helme (Spirit) & Bill Kneller (Rhapsody) will be racing with crews to
raise money for this cause. The RI LLS organizers are requesting spectator
boats this year to take groups out to observe the race on the water -
either sail boats or power boats. This may include families and pateints
undergoing treatment. The regatta starts at noon near Rose Island.
Following the regatta, there will be a BBQ and Awards at 1800 held under
the tent at New Yorlk Yacht Club. Tickets for the post race party are $40
per person and available for purchase on the website at this link:
