2012 PHRF RESULTS - Jamestown YC

Post by TrippAlyn »

PHRF SEASON OPENER
As the 2011 season at Jamestown YC ended last Oct. 2nd in a wheeze and a death rattle, not even worthy of a whimper, the 2012 season came in like the proverbial lion with a strong southerly of 16-20 with gusts to 22-25. The shuddering, rapidly oscillating puffs whistled down on the fleet to make for some interesting sailing while the strong incoming tidal current kept the seas relatively flat and kept the "salt spray factor" down.
Of the 25 registered entries only 12 made it out for the start. Three boats from CHNYC finished as follows:
CLASS A (8 boats) ---
7 - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller)
8 - SPIRIT (EC Helme)
CLASS C (2 boats) ---
2 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer)
At present, we're missing approx. 5 of our regular PHRF racers and hope that we'll see them compete sometime during the season. Please NOTE: this thread will be the active reporting site for CHNYC entries in the 3 JYC series for the 2012 season.
Any other events will be covered by separate threads.

SPRING RACE #2
Spring racing is indeed living up to its reputation of cold, wet & blustery! In a wet sou'easter gusting to 21
we raced out to Ft. Adams, back to SRM #3, then close reached to the finish off the Jamestown dock. Another
quick race lasting only approx. 45mins. The rough sea state (due to the ebb current) never had time to build
up and it was a smooth ride except for the sudden auto-tack near Ft. Adams which plunged the weather rail
(and the SUMMER WIND crew) into a cold, salty dousing. Bill Kneller reports that an unexpected runout of the
spinnaker halyard aboard RHAPSODY resulted in shrimping activities.....he's looking to renew his fishing license!
Of the 30 registered entries 24 made it out for the start. Four boats from CHNYC finished as follows:
CLASS A (13 boats) ---
9 - SPIRIT (EC Helme)
10 - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller)
CLASS C (4 boats) ---
3 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer)
4 - SECOND WIND (Steve & Carol Parfet)
Please NOTE: this thread will be the active reporting site for CHNYC entries in the 2012 JYC spring,
summer & fall series. Any other events will be covered by separate threads.

SPRING RACE #3
Well, we got an early taste of the light air racing normally associated with the summer series. With a downwind start thrown at us by the JYC Race Committee the starts looked something like the paintings of the Oklahoma Land Rush rather than the tactical start of a sailboat race. After the badly skewed line in Race #2, maybe we'll get a decent starting line sometime in the future.
After the run down to ZULU, both classes beat to a windward mark (Class A: XRAY (Bishop's Rock near the NWC)(Class C: Can #13 north of the bridge) then ran back to ZULU before fetching to the finish. It was a beautiful evening with a steady
NNE wind of 5-8kts. Here are our results:
CLASS A (13 boats) ---
11 - SPIRIT (EC Helme)
13 - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller)
CLASS C (5 boats) ---
4 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer)
5 - SECOND WIND (Steve & Carol Parfet) (a squeaker, just 6secs back!)
Please note that at least two of our PHRF Fleet boats (RHAPSODY & SPIRIT) will be racing in the annual Leukemia Cup Regatta in Newport on Saturday, June 2nd and would appreciate your support! Thank you!

SPRING RACE #4
The racecourse was blessed with a steady southerly of around 15kts and the RC gave us a windward start to beat
to ZULU. Though the pin end was favored a bit the line gave everyone a bit of a tactical contest. Class A had a
general recall and had to roll to the back of the fleet. Classes B & C got off decent starts and were Class C was
beating to ZULU when Class A finally cleared the line.
Class C had a wing-and-wing down to Can #13 north of the bridge and a beat back to ZULU, while Class A overtook
Class C while they were on the running leg. It got a bit crowded down at the can but most boats kept clear. All
classes beat back to ZULU so there was some converging of fleets along the way. It was a great night of racing
and we thank the JYC RC for a fair race. Here are the results:
CLASS A (14 boats) ---
3 - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller....1 sec out of 2nd place, a close one!)
10 - SPIRIT (EC Helme)
CLASS C (6 boats) ---
5 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer)
Tuesday, 5 June is the wrapup to the spring series with race #5.

SPRING RACE #5
An exciting start for all classes just south of the bridge in a 15kt nor'east breeze
against an incoming tide. Lots of action at the line and on the approach to the
bridge. Once through the bridge all classes continued the beat to XRAY (Bishop's
Rock) and then bore off for various downwind legs. It was a good night of racing
but the old saying "dying northerly" was indeed true and we all finished in lighter
breeze.
CLASS A (13 boats) ---
6 - SPIRIT (EC Helme) (Series 11th place)
DNC - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller) (Series 10th place)
CLASS C (5 boats) ---
5 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer) (Series 4th place)
Now that the Spring Series has been completed we begin racing in
the Summer Series on Tuesday, 12 June.

SUMMER RACE #1
A great start to the JYC 10-race Summer Series! With a strong seabreeze and moderate incoming flood tide the seas were relatively flat and the starts were exciting as we
all beat out to Special Race Mark (SRM) 15 at historic Hammersmith Farm. Judging the current and the optimum tack for approach to the mark were critical as the wind
lightened considerably up under the shelter of Castle Hill. The downwind legs were solid spinnaker legs for Classes A & B, while D had a firm wing-and-wing run down to
SRM 3 at the Jamestown end of the Newport Bridge. The beats back to either 4 or ROMEO were very competitive amongst the various classes.
A highlight for the CHNYC boats was in D Class. Despite finishing 9:15 behind scratch boat DUCK SOUP, SUMMER WIND was able to save her time to nip DS by a narrow 5secs
to claim second place....wow! When you consider the close racing.....where do you save or lose 5 secs?.....that's a close one!
CLASS A (8 boats) ---
6 - SPIRIT (EC Helme)
CLASS B (10 boats) ---
9 - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller)
CLASS C (5 boats) ---
2 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer)

SUMMER RACE #2
It was a pleasant summer afternoon race started in a 10kt sou'west seabreeze. All classes beat to ZULU with Class A running out to VICTOR just SE of
Gould Island and Classes B & D running to XRAY (Bishop's Rock off the War College). The windward leg to the finish was smooth as we enjoyed a great
sunset and a fair racecourse.
CLASS A (6 boats) ---
6 - SPIRIT (EC Helme)
CLASS B (6 boats) ---
5 - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller)

CLASS C
(5 boats) ---
3 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer)

SUMMER RACE #3
Well, a little variety now as we arrive at the starting area in a gusty 12kt nor'wester....this will mean a downwind start in the grand style of the Oklahoma Land Rush. The moderate
ebb tide has generated a very strong outbound current which can sweep you over the line early and make it difficult to claw back over the line to restart. D Class has to wait for its
start as J-22s and Ensigns in the Newport YC series are rounding SRM 3 to which is tied the JYC RC boat! SNAFU!!
Eventually all 5 classes have started and we're on the way running down to #2 (red nun off Ft. Adams). All classes beat back to SIERRA (bell off the SW corner of Rose Island), then
run to YANKEE (green can off SW of Goat Island) before starting a long beat (Class A goes to SRM 15 at Potter's Cove, Class B & C beat to #13 just north of the bridge). From their
respective windward marks all boats beat or fetch to the finish line.
In a close race RHAPSODY nips Gromit by 10 secs for a close 3rd place....way to go, Bill & crew!
CLASS A (7 boats) ---
5 - SPIRIT (EC Helme)
CLASS B (8 boats) ---
3 - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller)
CLASS C (5 boats) ---
3 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer)

SUMMER RACE #4
With the seabreeze a bit right of SSW, the 11kt sou'wester made it almost a starboard tack fetch from the RC boat end of the starting line. There were fierce battles for
dominance at the boat end in the pre-start tactics which made for dramatic action. With an almost-full moon the flood tide was strong enough to study the merits of a
quick hitch to the right to get out of the strongest part of the current.
A broad reach down to #13 takes us under the Newport Bridge and Class A has a nice beat out to SRM 4 at Hammersmith while D Class has a fetch to ROMEO for those of
us who played the leg smartly! Both classes reach back to SRM 3 where they beat to the finish line. Those who round SRM 3 and hold the port tack into the Jamestown
shore are rewarded by fetching the pin end of the finish line.....or close to it, without having to tack again.
CLASS A (8 boats) ---
4 - SPIRIT (EC Helme)
CLASS B (10 boats) ---
DNC - RHAPSODY (Bill Kneller)
CLASS C (5 boats) ---
3 - SUMMER WIND (Tripp Alyn & KJ Delamer)
