2013 PHRF Racing RESULTS - Jamestown YC
After some initial problems with the RC boat engine, JYC was able to start its 1st race of the 2013 season Spring Series on May 14th. They list the wind as 280 (West) at 8kts. Wish that we had seen 8kts (True windspeed) at anytime on the racecourse. In any case....it was very light air with a down wind start. All 3 classes reached or ran towards the War College. Class A had a finer reach while classes B & C sailed to #11 off Pringle Hall (the red/green can). With only 3 CHNYC boats racing, the results are:
SPRING SERIES RACE #1 - MAY 14
Class A (5 boats)
4 -[i] SPIRIT - EC Helme
5 - [i]RHAPSODY - Bill Kneller
Class C (4 boats)
4 - [i]SUMMER WIND - Tripp Alyn

SPRING SERIES #2 - 21 May
In my 9th year of racing SW in the Jamestown YC series, this had to be one of the strangest races[i] ever! The RC has this race listed as 210 (SSW) at 15 kts. I really wonder where they are when they come up with these wind readings.....maybe sitting on the dock and the windspeed is the result of popping open so many beer cans....hmm? Yes, the wind was 210...they got that part right, but we started in much lighter wind with an ebb pushing the starters up to the line. Class A had a good scramble on the starting line with lots of action! All classes had rounded ZULU over near Clingstone and were headed up the East Passage, either to VICTOR (SE of Gould Island), XRAY (Bishop's Rock) or #11 (the can off Pringle Hall). Before the non-spinnaker Class C could get to the Newport Bridge indications from the squally weather well up the Bay showed a 180 windshift on the way down the Bay. Whisker Poles DOWN!! When the north wind swept thru the fleet it gave us a beat/beat course which made for some interesting tactics.
The southerly had been pushing water into the Bay. Now with the very strong northerly (gusts up to 27....) the ebb became very prounced and it was indeed tough going trying to sail to windward thru the bridge.....some close calls on the concrete bridge stanchions! Boats had a touch time on their mark roundings too as the current forced them to sail well beyond the layline just to be able to safely round the mark.....some good lessons learned. A dazzling electrical display made the racing safety a bit tense, but all made it home with no problems reported. With the full moon, we'll see a 5.7 ft. tide change on Fri/Sat.....watch that current!

With a 4-2-4 in the spring they started the season with a solid performance.....then [i]SPIRIT took flight as she posted two 1sts, a 2nd and
four 3rd place finishes which placed them in 3rd for the series and very close to 2nd place. [i]RHAPSODY also had a great Summer series with a 2nd and four 3rd place finishes for a solid 5th place standing. [i]SUMMER WIND finished the season with a solid last race, only 28 secs out of 2nd place to finish 3rd and secure her 4th place in the Fall series ahead of rival 2nd Wind.
We'll post more results for the other racing around the Bay and in the New England region as it is received from the skippers.
Over the winter, you'll have some time to think about racing in 2014 and starting your timetable/countdown to the first race in the spring.
As always, the PHRF fleet at CHNYC stands ready to assist you with all matters regarding your PHRF rating, tuning, tactics, boathandling and other ingredients to the formula for racing success.....just ask us!
