The CHNYC forum is provided with many features. The best way to learn them is to browse around and try things. If you run into a problem, or have a question - Please post questions as a reply to this posting. Answers will be provided here for all to see.

Get Notified via Email if a New Post or Topic is Posted
How to be notified for private messages, replies to your posts, or new posts in selected forums
Each user has the ability to select various notification options for postings on the forum and private messages. Here is how you select the options available (assumes you are logged in to do this).
Personal Message Notification Emails
Notify when Private Messages are received: Click "User Control Panel" on the upper left menu bar below the CHNYC burgee to open the user control panel (UCP). Click "Board Preferences" tab at the top, then "Edit Global Settings" on the left. Click "Yes" next to Notify me on new private messages:. Note that if you select "No" for Allow users to send you private messages:, you will only receive messages from the board administrator, so unless you are trying to hide from everyone, you should allow users to send you messages. Change any other settings on this screen that you want, then click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.
Notify when someone replies to your Posts: Click "User Control Panel" on the upper left menu bar below the CHNYC burgee to open the user control panel (UCP). Click "Board Preferences" tab at the top, then "Edit posting defaults" on the left. Click "Yes" next to Notify me upon replies by default:. Note that you can override this for each post, but the default allows you to be notified if anyone replies to your forum posts. Change any other settings on this screen that you want, then click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.
Forum & Topic Notification Emails
Notify when someone Posts in a Forum: Click "Board Index" on the upper left menu bar below the CHNYC burgee to display all the forums. Click on the title of a forum that you want to be notified when a posting is made (e.g. CHNYC General Topics, CHNYC Shields Racing, etc.). Scroll to the bottom of the page below all of the postings. At the bottom left there will be a box with a check mark and a label displayed that either reads"Subscribe Forum" or "Unsubscribe Forum". If you click on the respective text that is displayed, it toggles your selection. When that forum is selected as subscribed, you will receive an email whenever somebody posts in that forum. You can go through each of the forums and make your subscription selections as desired.

Click on the title of a forum that you want view a topic, then click on the topic itself. Scroll to the bottom of the page below all of the postings. At the bottom left there will be a box with a check mark and a label displayed that either reads "Subscribe topic" or "Unsubscribe topic". If you click on the respective text that is displayed, it toggles your selection. When that topic is selected as subscribed, you will receive an email whenever somebody replies to that topic. You can go through each of the topics and make your subscription selections as desired. If you have general interest in an area, it may be easier just to subscribe to the forum, per above.

Controlling Age of the Posts You See
Changing Viewing Preferences - How old posts are made invisible
"I don't want to see all that old stuff cluttering my screen" or "I can't see that old stuff I wanted to see".
Either way - we can help you. Each individual forum (e.g. CHNYC General Topics, CHNYC Shields Racing,...) under the main forum category (CHNYC Forum) can be set by you.
Click on the forum you want to change the settings for and scroll down to the bottom. There is a dropdown labeled "Display topics from previous:" where you can select the date range. You can also modify the default sort order which is set to show the most recent post at the top. This is only a one time setting. If you want to change the default, read on.

Automatic Links magically appear in your post
Various links to websites appear in posts automatically
"I'm seeing links in my posts. How did that happen?".
Don't be alarmed if you see links to other websites appear in your posts. The forum has a list for various sailing related links that will automatically appear based on what you type. For instance, if you type CHNYC, Coasters Harbor Navy YC or New York YC when your post is submitted, it will automatically provide a link to those websites. Here is what these three links would look like in your post "CHNYC, Coasters Harbor Navy YC or New York YC". Feel free to post a message on the forum at this link with any additional links desired.

How to change your password
How you can change your password
Each user has the ability to change their password. If you forget your password, the system can email you a temporary one that you can reset to what you want. Here is how you reset your password.
Password Reset
If you are not logged in and forgot your password: Click "Login" link on the upper right located below the search box. Once the login screen is displayed, click the "I forgot my password" link below the password box. Enter your email address in the box provided and click the "Submit" button. A temporary password will be emailed to you. Use this to log in, then proceed to the step below.
You are logged in and want to reset your password: Click "User Control Panel" on the upper left menu bar below the CHNYC burgee to open the user control panel (UCP). Click "Profile" tab at the top, then "Edit Account Settings" on the left. Enter your desired password in both the "New Password" and "Confirm Password" boxes, then enter the existing password you are changing in the "Current Password" box. Click the "Submit" button below those boxes. Your password is now reset.
