Letter from the Commodore – NAVSTA Base Access for CHNYC Associate Members and CHNYC Guests

NAVSTA Base Access for CHNYC Associate Members and CHNYC Guests

CHNYC Associate Members and Guests,

Unfortunately with the security concerns facing all of us in today’s environment, access on base has become more restrictive. One of the results is it’s getting harder for non DoD personnel to get access on base. I regret it is no longer feasible or practical for CHNYC to create, maintain, and sponsor a list of people who seek unlimited access on base.

We have spent considerable time with NAVSTANPT Security for a ‘best solution’ for our associate members and guests to gain access. It appears the best solution for all is to decentralize sponsorship.

CHNYC Policy: Associate Members and Guests needing frequent or recurring access i.e. a sailing instructor or board member, can seek sponsorship from a DoD officer (active or retire) in the rank of 05/06. The sponsor will be responsible to escort their guests to the security office and submit a request for access up to 90 days at a time. The guest seeking access will provide their SSN(s), date(s) of birth, drivers licenses and addresses (all personal info) to allow NAVSTA Security to conduct a background investigation. The responsibility for the guest will reside with the sponsor and not CHNYC.

That is the background, process, and policy.  I would ask you to consider for what reason and how frequently you will need to get on base. If it is to attend CHNYC formal functions, I will work with MWR to allow access for that day of the specific event. If you have friends or family at the marina willing to sponsor you or escort you aboard each time, that is probably the easiest solution.

I’m sorry there is not a simpler answer.  Security concerns has made many things more challenging. I know you understand.

If this causes you to reconsider your CHNYC affiliation please let me know and we will arrange to refund your membership fee.

Only the very best,

Michael F. Van Vleck

CHNYC Online Ship’s Store at Lands’ End

CHNYC has established an Online Ship’s Store with Lands’ End.  See the Ship’s Store located on the CHNYC website menu bar.

The system we rolled out in 2010 to pay membership and social event registration has been integrated in the CHNYC website.

Lands’ End is a proven provider of high quality clothing and accessories.  Our logo, which is available on the site and visible when you order, can be applied to most items for about six dollars.  This is a more efficient and cost effective way for CHNYC to handle our clothing and accessory purchases that our members will find much more convenient.  Thanks to Paul Mankofsky, Cheryl Cox, and Pat St. Onge for all their hard work in making this happen.

We are reviewing our current Ship’s Store inventory, and will continue to offer these items at the Ship’s Bell (located at the Naval War College) and at our social functions as we reduce the inventory we have on hand.  We will not be taking any more orders for additional clothing or accessories. The Lands End site has plenty to choose from.  For those items that we have on hand that we can’t move at the Ship’s Bell, we will come up with a plan to sell them off.  Our goal is to recover as much of our cost as possible, considering the inventory’s age and sizing mix.  We will sell those items on a first come basis.

CHNYC will continue to stock items that Lands’ End will not carry (such as burgees), and these items will continue to be available for our members at the Ship’s Bell and other CHNYC events.

Please visit our Lands End Online Ship’s Store and enjoy!

  • Non-D.O.D. guests must be sponsored by the host member. The host member is responsible for their guests and all applicable Naval Station arrangements (Security/Gate Access, etc).
  • The user of a CHNYC mooring agrees to assume all risks of use and to waive any and all right to any claims against CHNYC or Naval Station Newport. CHNYC makes no representation concerning the strength of a mooring.  The mooring must be vacated if winds exceed 40 mph.

The marina office manages mooring reservations and verifies requester’s eligibility. If the mooring is for a guest the member must show up at the marina office to make the reservation.
