Letter from the Commodore – NAVSTA Base Access for CHNYC Associate Members and CHNYC Guests

NAVSTA Base Access for CHNYC Associate Members and CHNYC Guests

CHNYC Associate Members and Guests,

Unfortunately with the security concerns facing all of us in today’s environment, access on base has become more restrictive. One of the results is it’s getting harder for non DoD personnel to get access on base. I regret it is no longer feasible or practical for CHNYC to create, maintain, and sponsor a list of people who seek unlimited access on base.

We have spent considerable time with NAVSTANPT Security for a ‘best solution’ for our associate members and guests to gain access. It appears the best solution for all is to decentralize sponsorship.

CHNYC Policy: Associate Members and Guests needing frequent or recurring access i.e. a sailing instructor or board member, can seek sponsorship from a DoD officer (active or retire) in the rank of 05/06. The sponsor will be responsible to escort their guests to the security office and submit a request for access up to 90 days at a time. The guest seeking access will provide their SSN(s), date(s) of birth, drivers licenses and addresses (all personal info) to allow NAVSTA Security to conduct a background investigation. The responsibility for the guest will reside with the sponsor and not CHNYC.

That is the background, process, and policy.  I would ask you to consider for what reason and how frequently you will need to get on base. If it is to attend CHNYC formal functions, I will work with MWR to allow access for that day of the specific event. If you have friends or family at the marina willing to sponsor you or escort you aboard each time, that is probably the easiest solution.

I’m sorry there is not a simpler answer.  Security concerns has made many things more challenging. I know you understand.

If this causes you to reconsider your CHNYC affiliation please let me know and we will arrange to refund your membership fee.

Only the very best,

Michael F. Van Vleck
