Organizers have selected the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) and the R.I. Red Cross Service to Armed Forces Fund as the charities who will receive funding from the 10th Anniversary Sail for Pride. “We want to help those servicemen and women and their families who have suffered as a result of fighting for our freedom since 9-11,” says Scott Murray, co-founder of the annual sailing event. We don’t want to take their sacrifices for granted…and we will never forget,” he adds. The original Sail for Pride was organized three weeks after the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Since 2001, the name “Sail for Pride” was retired and the event was named Sail for Hope – incorporating the Ocean State’s motto. To date, the events have raised over $800,000 for over a dozen charities. The regatta was founded by three local sailors, Brad Read and Scotty Murray, both from Middletown, RI and Newporter Mick Harvey. The name Sail for Pride will be used again this year to commemorate the first event. Local founding businesses and organizations that have supported every event since 2001 include: New England Boatworks, IYAC, Sail Newport, the Newport Shipyard, Café Zelda’s, Mac Designs, Brewer Yacht Yards and Budweiser. R.I. Red Cross spokesman Nick Logothets says, “In the past 12 months, the American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter has received more than 650 requests for assistance for Rhode Island servicemen and women and their families. These requests are a direct result of the hardships placed upon these families as they continue to defend our freedom.” Sail Newport will invite boats over 22 feet to join the 18-plus mile race around Conanicut Island. The race will start outside of Newport Harbor. All types of boats will be encouraged to participate and there will be many classes offered for handicap and one-design boats. Boats that do not have a Narragansett Bay PHRF rating will be given one for the event. In addition, boats will be asked to fly their ensign from their transom in a show of patriotism as the flotilla navigates around Conanicut island and finishes in Newport Harbor. For more information, http://www.sailnewport.org. Also, a fundraising event will follow the race at the Newport Shipyard where race trophies will be presented along with a trophy for the top fundraising boat in the event. A silent auction will also be held to generate additional funding for the selected charities. Mike Holty, of the WWP says, “ The Vision of the Wounded Warrior Project is to foster the most successful, well adjusted generation of wounded warriors in the nation’s history. As Americans, we must do all that we can to make this Vision a reality.” # Sail Newport, Sail for Pride Organizer, is a non-profit organization dedicated to public access sailing programs.
